No matter the weather, here’s how to have a fun-filled family weekend in Rotorua

We’ve all been there before – family getaways can quickly turn stressful if the weather doesn’t play ball with the itinerary you had planned. The mood can sometimes turn sour if the sky turns grey – but don’t let it rain on your parade! Luckily for you, we’ve gathered together some all-weather Rotorua activities that’ll add a shine to your next holiday, no matter what the forecast has in store.

The muddier, the better at Off Road NZ

Rain is no obstacle at Off Road NZ – let’s be honest, who doesn’t love to plough through massive muddy puddles at full speed? It’s sure to put a big smile on the face of adventurers of all ages. Plus, the team provide all the wetweather protection you need to stay clean. There are no height or age restrictions on the family-favourite 4WD Bush Safari, but if you are looking at taking on the Monster 4×4 Thrill Ride, all passengers must be taller than 120cm. Experience Rotorua’s native forest in an unforgettable off-road adventure – even more wild and rugged in rainy weather!

Get set to get wet at ZORB

If you’re craving speed and thrills, ZORB should be at the top of the list. Embrace getting wet on New Zealand’s favourite downhill experience, on one of four action-packed courses. Splashing around as you rock and roll down the hill is all part of the fun! Stay warm with their heated changing rooms, and luxe hot tubs to enjoy before and after your rides – and the water inside the balls is also warm. The minimum age to jump into the ZORB is 5 years, so anyone school-aged or above will have the time of their lives.

Mountain bike through the Redwoods underneath the natural forest canopy

Rotorua’s famous Redwood Forest is the epicentre for mountain biking adventures – attracting riders from all across Aotearoa and the world. With over 160km worth of tracks, there’s something to suit every skill level – but a warning, it gets addictive! Let the young ones find their perfect ride and get hooked on trails like the Kids Loop and Mokopuna, graded at level 1 and 2 difficulty. Hire a regular bike, or an e-bike to make pedalling a little easier, from one of the many providers in town. Many trails are protected from the rain underneath the trees, and even if you’re getting a little wet, who doesn’t love the thrill of riding through the muddy puddles? The rain also brings the forest to life and freshens the air – making for a truly memorable ride.

Learn and laugh at the 3D Trick Art Gallery

Rotorua’s 3D Trick Art Gallery isn’t your average trip to the museum. Here, the whole family stars in the show! With 53 pieces of artwork that invite you to be part of the picture, you’ll capture plenty of fun snaps to remember the day by. Where else can you find yourself climbing mountains, riding alpacas, dodging giant crocodiles, then flying away in a hot air balloon all in one location? This fun-filled family experience is the perfect place to spend a few hours, laughing away at the quirkiness of the colourful 3D creations.

Find the fun at Motion Entertainment

Motion Entertainment is a hive of activity and offers something to make every child’s dream come true – with laser tag, mini golf, bowling, escape rooms, arcade games, a trampoline park and more, all under one roof. There’s plenty to keep you busy for an hour, an afternoon or a whole day, and some great parents vs. kids competitions to be had.

Warm up and relax at Polynesian Spa

After a busy day out and about, enjoy some chill time at Polynesian Spa. The family pool is great for the whole whānau, complete with hydro slide, whilst the parents can unwind in the neighbouring Rachel Spring alkaline mineral hot pools.

Rotorua is filled with fun-packed activities, great for all ages and all weather conditions. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of work to convince the kids to turn their frown upside down – as there’s still plenty of action to be had indoors, or when making a splash in the wonderful wet attractions in town.
